Product reviews and ratings
A customer who cannot pick the product up looks for someone else's experience. A page without a single rating looks like a shop nobody walks into, however good the product may be.
Reviews here are collected after the purchase, go through approval and only then get published. On top of that the average rating is sent to the search engine in a form it understands, so stars appear in search results as well.

What you actually get
Rating and comment with the product
The customer leaves a rating and a text, and the average is shown with the product and in the results list, where it influences the decision.
Approval before publishing
Every review goes through review, so insults and messages unrelated to the product never reach the site.
An invitation after the purchase
The customer is invited to rate the product after delivery, while the impression is still fresh. That is the only way the number of reviews actually grows.
Seller's reply
You can reply to every review publicly. A reply to a bad rating is often worth more than ten good ones.
Stars in search
The average rating is published as structured data, so the search engine can show it next to the result and lift the number of visits.
Common questions
Can only someone who bought leave a rating?
They can, if you set it that way. Restricting it to actual buyers cuts the number of fake ratings, but also the number of reviews, so the rule is chosen deliberately.
Can bad ratings be deleted?
They can, but the advice is not to delete them. A store with nothing but top marks arouses suspicion, and a reply to a complaint reads as more convincing than a deletion.
Are ratings about the store collected too?
They are. Besides product ratings, the seller rating fetched from an external source is displayed, which the page on analytics describes.
Do reviews slow the page down?
They do not. They load separately from the rest of the page, so they do not affect how fast the product appears.
